Dr. Gamble-George has joined PBS SciGirls as an advisor. SciGirls is an Emmy Award-winning PBS series and national informal STEM education initiative designed for girls, ages 8-13. Dr. Gamble-George will serve on an advisory board for a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Black SciGirls project entitled Black SciGirls: Investigating a Culturally Responsive PBS Media-enriched Approach to STEM Teaching and Learning (NSF Award #2115138). This project is a two-year Research in Service to Practice Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) project led by Twin Cities Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
As an advisor, Dr. Gamble-George will investigate and address multiple barriers for Black girls in STEM studies. She will serve on one of three identified Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) around gender equitable, culturally responsive and anti-racist professional development for educators, the integration of Black women STEM professionals as role models in media and outreach, or the design and implementation of STEM programs for Black girls. She will also participate in front-end evaluation to identify how SciGirls’ professional development (PD) can integrate gender equitable, culturally responsive and anti-racist practices to address barriers to STEM learning faced by Black girls by providing input that can be used to develop guides for educators to use with Black girls and their parents. Furthermore, Dr. Gamble-George will support outreach STEM programs that implement SciGirls’ activities by acting as a STEM professional woman role model for Black girls.
