Description: This semester long course assessed student knowledge and enhanced student comprehension for a class of 175 undergraduate students on the mammalian nervous system, particularly the organization of the human brain: (1) nerve cells – their structure, propagation of nerve impulses, and transfer of information between them; (2) sensory systems (e.g., sight and perception, hearing, and touch); (3) the motor system; (4) whole-brain systems that control sleep and consciousness, emotions, sexual behavior, and learning and memory; and (5) the biological basis of mental disorders, diseases of the brain, and repair mechanisms following brain injury.

Description: This semester long course reviewed basic general chemistry concepts – chemical reactions, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, gases, atomic structure, periodic trends, bonding, molecular structure, physical properties, intermolecular forces, and geometry of molecules – for a class of 15 undergraduate students that were discussed in lectures to assess student knowledge and further remediation.

  • Administered weekly quizzes (drills) derived from homework after lecture review to encourage students to study chemistry regularly

Course: Summer Program in Neuroscience, Excellence and Success (SPINES) for Neuroscience Ph.D. Students
Contact Hours: 56 contact hours/week (1 lecture: “From Mice to Humans: Behavioral Mechanisms of Substance Use and Misuse”)
Description: This three-week summer intensive immersion course that is dedicated to creating and sustaining an outstanding diverse workforce in neuroscience was for predoctoral students majoring in neuroscience (Class Size: 18). The course trains successful neuroscientists from backgrounds underrepresented in neuroscience to be leaders in the field, honing a variety of important professional skills, including communicating your science, winning grants, honing quantitative skills and preparing to be a top-notch PI.
Responsibilities:

  • Organized, ordered and received all equipment and supplies for the course, Summer Program in Neuroscience, Excellence and Success (SPINES), which trains successful neuroscientists from backgrounds underrepresented in neuroscience to be leaders in the field
  • Coordinated communications between the course director and all others who teach in the course
  • Supervised course assistants under the direction of the education office
  • Interfaced with education office as needed to ensure communication regarding contracts, travel reimbursements, and rules/regulations at MBL
  • Interacted/communicated with 18 predoctoral students to assist with student needs regarding (but not limited to) parking, housing, food, medical issues, and local amenities
  • Communicated as necessary with facilities and course directors regarding course emergencies, equipment failure, breakage, and supply storage
  • Participated in organizing and implementing arrangements for social gatherings of the course, including a datablitz with two other courses, Neural Systems & Behavior and Neurobiology: Mechanisms & Advanced Approaches, and a student symposium
  • Purchased food and beverages for course faculty, staff and students as needed; reserved space as needed for course gatherings
  • Was responsible for set-up and take-down of the course

Description: This semester long course for 1st Year Ph.D. Students (Class Size: 11) covered research papers that complement the didactic portion of the Fall semester of Bioregulation. It served as a teaching tool to understand how science is done, the basics behind key experimental methods, authorship issues, publication practices, and Responsible Conduct in Research.

Description: This one-week immersive lecture, discussion, and laboratory course was for new graduate students in the Neuroscience Graduate Program (Class Size: 10). The program provided a common knowledge base of neuroscience fundamentals, hands-on experience with techniques commonly used to explore cellular/molecular, circuits, systems, and cognitive neuroscience, and an introduction to a wide variety of Vanderbilt University faculty and graduate students and available resources to ensure a successful graduate career.
